Matthew’s gospel is the first one in our New Testament. And this is no arbitrary choice. Matthew’s gospel was the most well-known and shared of the gospels for the first 100 years of Christianity.
And while each of the gospels offers us unique perspectives on Jesus and what he taught, Matthew’s concern above all other concerns is to reveal a Jesus who seeks to get to the heart of a person beyond all the pretenses and facades we all take on to live in this world of ours. Do we ever feel safe or free to expose our naked selves beneath all the layers of protection? Before whom would we feel totally safe and totally loved to be so exposed?
The Jesus of Matthew’s gospel invites such an encounter with people, a veritable journey of dying and discarding of layers built on sand, in order to call forth a more authentic building up of a wholeness rooted on solid rock.
And so, beginning Wednesday, September 16, 7:30pm, we begin a journey through Matthew’s gospel account seeking to discover the true Jesus and ourselves more truly by entrusting ourselves to the Jesus we will meet on the journey. Will you join us?
